Product Description

From Raina Telgemeier, the #1 New York Times bestselling, multiple Eisner Award-winning author of Smile and Sisters!

Callie loves theater. And while she would totally try out for her middle school''s production of Moon over Mississippi, she can''t really sing. Instead she''s the set designer for the drama department''s stage crew, and this year she''s determined to create a set worthy of Broadway on a middle-school budget. But how can she, when she doesn''t know much about carpentry, ticket sales are down, and the crew members are having trouble working together? Not to mention the onstage AND offstage drama that occurs once the actors are chosen. And when two cute brothers enter the picture, things get even crazier!

I would like to personally thank all of the parents who wrote reviews telling others not to buy this book because of the bisexual story line. Thanks to them I immediately purchased this book for my 2nd grader so that she does not grow up to be someone who is freaked out or disgusted by such things. I told my daughter that some parents thought that a book about two boys or two girls liking each other and dating was inappropriate for someone her age. She said, “that’s ridiculous!” I agree.

My eight year old daughter enjoys reading this book series. She was thrilled when I gave her this book to read on a long car trip. As she was reading she started asking me questions about boys liking boys. I asked why and she said in the book that is a discussion that is occurring between characters. I was very surprised. This is a children''s book! I understand that this is something our kids growing up today will need to understand, however, this is something that as a parent, I will discuss and teach her more about! Not a book! And not at this age!. It''s my job as a parent to inform my child of certain social issues and I really didn''t appreciate this mature subject matter being pushed in this book. I took her book and read it myself to understand exactly the theme of the book. The subject matter continues throughout the book and ends with a bang. Not OK! And now my daughter and I have had conversations that I would''ve preferred to have when she was a year or two older and could understand a bit better. I hope this gives an insight into this book so you can decide as a parent if it''s appropriate or not for your child.

This book adresses the topic of homosexuality. I was not ready to explain to my 2nd grader the ins and outs of homosexuality. This is my fault for not doing my homework ahead of time. My child had already read several books from this series which were all in her school library, I just kind of assumed it must be appropriate. It''s not, at least for an 8 year old. I right this review to warn other parents.

My 7 year old daughter loved Sisters and Smile so she really wanted the rest of this authors books. I didn’t realize this title is recommended for 10 and over since the others skewed younger. My daughter was very excited and enjoyed the book, but I did get a shock when she came out of her room and asked what “Bi” meant. The story isn’t overly sexual at all, there are some crushes, but there is one page where a character asks another if they are gay or bi, so be prepared. My daughter is a little younger than the intended audience, so I would have waited to get this book had I known.

Drama is a graphic book illustrated by raina telgemeier, one of my favorite authors and illustrators ! The books protaginist is a young girl called callie who is funky, full of ideas ,determined and has a passion for drama! The book covers some very good and important issues like being gay or lesbian. As drama unfolds callie discovers some new friends. They are twin brothers and are gay . But thete is a difference that seperates these two budding actors. Jesse is shy and unable to express his feelings about being gay whereas Justin is extremely open about being gay and feels extremely comfortable . Will Jesse be able to feel comfortable and open when expressing his feelinhs a bout being gay. I also loved watching callie and her friends create there show and produce it . The drawings are excellent and the plot is 10 out of 10!!!!!!! On the night of a big dance something upsets Callie( i dont want to tell you or i might spoil it for you !) . Will callie be able to control her feelings and be able to understand the life of her gay friends and will the show be able to go on despite a disaster in rehearsels? This is an excellent book that will make young readers more aware of LGBT and should help gay or lesbian people to feel free and happy about being themselves ! I cant wait for the next book Raina Telgemeier writes! :) :) :)

Callie is a massive lover of theatre and she’s going through a lot - boys, friends, ambition. There’s a lovely coming out scene with one of the characters. I quite enjoyed this! It’s a bit more teenage than is suitable for my classroom.

I liked this graphic novel more than I thought I would.I read some rather negative reviews but still wanted to buy it because of how great Raina''s other graphic novels were.ie,Smile and Sisters.Yes,boyfriends were involved,so was creativity and other good feelings so all in all,a good read. It was also good to read about people''s enthusiasm for stage and theatre...,and costumes,of course.Maybe Not the basement though ! The progression of the characters,in life as well as on stage, was great to see.As you would expect, ideas were the mainstay of the book. Both For the book and In it too.I was really rooting for Callie at the end - such innovation ! The audience loved it too.An excellent performance.
